I had a helluva time getting my new Toshiba T235d to run Ubuntu 10.10. I hope that this tip/trick will save someone an hour of fiddling. You need to be a novice to intermediate linux user to try this. Please do not blame me if you blow it up!
Here are some instructions:- Download Ubuntu from here.
- Download the Universal USB Installer.
- Insert your bootable USB disk while in Windows 7
- Find a command prompt and start DiskPart
- Use the instructions here to select the disk, clean it, create a partition and mark it as active. PLEASE NOTE: If you select the wrong disk you risk losing your Windows 7 partition
- Use the Universal USB Installer to write the iso to the bootable USB disk. Do not re-format the disk along the way, otherwise it will render the USB disk unbootable.
- Shut down the machine
- Turn on the machine and hit F12 to boot from USB
- Hit escape at the Ubuntu splash screen to bring up the menu
- Under advanced options (F6 I believe) make sure Linux ACPI=off
- After installing, it will reboot. When it does, the grub menu comes up. You have to pause it there, and press “e” to edit the grub menu for Ubuntu. You want to enter acpi=off at the end of the linux kernel line.
- After booting, you have to edit the grub menu to include the acpi option. This blog post tells you the location of the file. As we did before, we need to enter acpi=off in the appropriate place so it is appended to the linux kernel line.
- Enjoy Ubuntu 10.10! You will love the Ubuntu purple if you purchased the Red Toshiba.
Also, I will post some nice photographs of my new laptop when I get a chance. I think it is sort of gaudy. However, the keyboard is really clean and crisp, and I like the fact that it has an HDMI out. Once I have used it for a bit I will post a more in-depth review.
Hi, I have a Toshiba satellite t215d which I believe has a similar Chooser. I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 per your directions. Can you tell me what you needed to do to get wireless working, if anything?
Thanks a lot for the post.
Sorry I meant to say ‘similar chipset’ but android’s autocorrect changed it.
The wireless just worked on the T235d. No fiddling or messing. Now that being said, on occasion the wireless drops out and I have to reboot to get it working again. This typically occurs after it has been sitting idle for a long time. I’m still trying to figure that out.
