Garbage Consumption Tax

This is a great idea – picture from Switzerland. It is a consumption-based tax on garbage. They don’t pick up the bag if it doesn’t have a sticker. Sticker costs a Euro or so per bag. It forces you to minimize the amount of garbage you create.

The American system is to charge a “pickup” fee for each home, but it is not capped and there is no penalty for creating a lot of garbage. I guess you can call it the American way, though the idea seems un-American to me!
