Sunacle To (Maybe) Sell MySQL
Posted: September 15th, 2009 | Author: saldarji | Filed under: business, technology | No Comments »Now that Oracle has run across some red tape in their acquisition of Sun, I wonder if they will sell off MySQL, possibly at a deep discount. I was speculating about this for a while with some coworkers, and my speculation was confirmed by this report.
The journal is also reporting that there are potential bidders for MySQL, and that it is fairly certain that it will go for a figure south of $1B.
Though analysts say there are potential bidders for MySQL, they also say Oracle isn’t likely to get an optimal price.
“I can tell you for sure no one is going to pay $1 billion for it,” said Cowen & Co. analyst Peter Goldmacher.
The Motley fool is reporting that it could fit well with Google:
So Oracle looks likely to keep Sun’s hardware business and become a mini-IBM — but will probably have to leave MySQL by the wayside. The MySQL operation could be spun out as a separate company on the public market. It could also be picked up by private investment firms and then prepared for a future IPO. Or some other acquisition-hungry giant might step in — IBM and Mr. Softy would hit the same antitrust walls, but MySQL would be a fine fit with Google.
