Ever since I went to Stephanie’s on Newbury, I have been thinking a lot about second generation Indians and the way they dress. I went to that restaurant a few weeks ago and met up with some friends. While I was there, I noticed that there were a ton of very stylish Indian Americans. If I had to guess, I would guess that most were second generation.
The politically incorrect term for someone who just emigrated is Fob Unfortunately, there is a huge stigma for Indian-Americans to be seen as being too “Fobbish.” I think that it is in reaction to this that Indian-Americans tend to dress very stylishly. Maybe metro-sexual is a good descriptor. I think a more complimentary terms might be “euro” or “trendy”
First generation Indians tend to be very frugal. Indians are one of the wealthiest ethnic sub-groups in America right now. I think they are the wealthiest if you look at it in terms of median income. So maybe it is just the second generation spending the first generation’s money.
I apologize in advance to any vegans looking at this page. You may not want to read any further.
I have gained a ton of weight while working in Arkansas. Ok, maybe it is not quite a ton, but definitely >10 lbs. This is probably the result of eating too many “Cheddar Bombs.” I have blogged about this before. But in case you didn’t see my earlier post, a Cheddar Bomb is a 1/3 pound of hamburger covered with 1/4 – 1/2 lb of cheese.
(11:53:59 AM) Sal Darji: How much cheese is on a cheddar bomb?
(11:54:02 AM) Sal Darji: 1/4 lb?
(11:55:07 AM) Aaron Gresko: Probably
(11:55:24 AM) Aaron Gresko: It is so nasty
(11:55:28 AM) Aaron Gresko: and delicious
I’m not sure about the total amount of cheese, but it overflows the burger and covers an entire plate. You have to cut up the cheese and stack it on top of the burger, like Ralph Schaffner has done below.
About a year and a half ago, I decided to make a strategic shift to hold more cash in my portfolio. I thought it would be safer and also a good way to save for a house. Rather than invest it overseas or domestically in equities, I began to horde some cash. I also liquidated some equity holdings. In retrospect, it was a very good move, since my equity holdings have been decimated, atleast in the short term.
Unfortunately, as this BusinessWeek article points out, savers have really drawn the short straw. The article argues that the American saver is suffering between high inflation, lowsavings rates, and a weak dollar. On top of that, as bank failures become more common, even cash in a bank may not be so safe.
I envy my classmates who bought their homes in the last few years. I thought I could wait for house prices to fall a little bit before purchasing. Unfortunately, the more I wait, the more my cash holdings are being eroded by inflation. Furthermore, house prices are being buoyed by the stimulus checks, bailouts and nationalization. (Yeah, I said nationalization.)
Addendum:
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention this story. There are money market funds now that are “breaking the dollar” – going under 1.00 in NAVs. This is further proof that we are undergoing a severe banking crisis.
Strangely, one of McCain’s advisor is stating that McCain was responsible for the creation of the Blackberry. Or maybe he meant that the commerce committee allowed for the prevalence of mobile communications devices, such as the Blackberry.
Pressed to provide an example of what McCain had accomplished on that committee, Holtz-Eakin said the senator did not have jurisdiction over financial markets, then he held up his Blackberry, telling reporters: “He did this.”
“Telecommunications of the United States, the premiere innovation in the past 15 years, comes right through the Commerce Committee. So you’re looking at the miracle that John McCain helped create,” Holtz-Eakin said. “And that’s what he did. He both regulated and deregulated the industry.”
I have to point out that RIM, although listed on a US exchange, is actually a Canadian company.
I saw a picture of the Sony Xperia, and it has a smiley face icon for the symbol button. Very cool. Strangely, the other images of the Sony Xperia X1 actually say “Sym”.
I have no idea when this phone will be launched, but it looks pretty cool. I like the form factor, but unfortunately it is based on Windows Mobile.
This article in the IHT compares governing Alaska to governing Nigeria.
With vast distances, large numbers of indigenous peoples and a narrowly based extraction economy — with a handful of giant multinational oil corporations dominating the game — some economists say a country like Nigeria might be an apter comparison.
The oil companies are putting a lot of money back into the economy as a result of an Alaskan windfall tax. Consequently, Alaskan residents are getting $1,200 bonus checks. No wonder Sarah Palin’s approval record is over 80%!
