So I keep referring to these small, flash-based, laptop-like computing devices, and I did not have a good name for that segment of the laptop industry. The Asus eeepc is an example of one of these. I counted 3 of them at the airport on Sunday night, so I’m pretty sure that this is the next big thing. I’m thinking about buying one for my Mom, since she is computer-phobic.
Well, the folks at Intel have come up with a name for these devices. Apparently, a device of this type is called a Netbook.
Another kick-ass technology on the horizon is the Splashtop. I’m not a 100% sure on how the technology works, but it looks like it is a full System-on-chip running Linux. The benefits of this are obvious – instant-on and low-power consumption.
Both technologies are being adopted by Asustek. I’m beginning to wonder if it is time to invest in that company.
In addition to KDE vs. Gnome, or VI vs. Emacs, we can now add KVM vs. XEN. Ready? Set. Nerd Fight!
Linux kernel developer and Linux Foundation Fellow Ted Ts’o claimed it’s inevitable that Red Hat and Novell will standardize on KVM because of its inclusion in the kernel. He said the Xen project was working to integrate with the kernel but enever finished the effort.
What seems silly is the whole idea that Novell or Red Hat need to pick sides in this. Both companies are trying to sell solutions in this space, and perhaps there is a need to monetize the technology. But since neither is essential to the success of the companies, and both are open source products, it could be better just to stay neutral and optimize the distributions for both, since that is the core business.
I’ve seen demos of both KVM and XEN technology. To be honest, the KVM stuff (Qumranet and Spice) looks far cooler to me. But I know absolutely nothing about this.
I spotted a green snail today while walking Scooter.
As I suspected, I am a walking ecological disaster. I found out from Ben Menoza that my Dopplr profile now tracks my carbon profile.
I am responsible for 6,902 kg CO2 up to date. I am responsible for 1,763 kg CO2 in the month of May (and I didn’t even get all my trips into Doppr).
My carbon footprint is bigger than yours.
Tracey made me some pancakes last week. I think it was unintentional, but she made a pancake that gave me a horrible flashback to my rabbit experience a few weeks ago. Below you can see a graphic picture of a dismembered rabbit pancake with a sweet strawberry sauce.
Thankfully she gave me the duck-shaped pancake and reserved the rabbit one for herself. Eating that would have been too traumatic.
