TV Sucks

Posted: February 19th, 2008 | Author: | Filed under: stuff | No Comments »

Since I spend so much time traveling to Arkansas, I get exposed to different TV than Boston. Not that I have a lot of time to watch TV – I mainly watch it in my hotel room while working. I am beginning to think that Boston has the worst TV in the nation, if you exclude WGBH.

Minneapolis has the best late night TV, IMHO, because they have the best Cable Access shows. For example, the best show concept in the world has to be Drinking with Ian which is like watching a drunk Conan O’Brian. There are a few other shows as well.

The show I miss the most, which I can get in Minneapolis and Bentonville is Corner Gas It is a hilarious Canadian show that is a little bit like Northern Exposure. Unfortunately it is on Superstation WGN, which is not carried on my Comcast Cable.

Lastly, I am completely addicted to Firebrand Maybe it is because I almost ended up in the Marketing industry with my Marketing MBA and Marketing experience at a startup. It is actually a lot of fun to watch, and is addicting to anyone who has spent time thinking about product, promotion, price and placement.

Another OpenSUSE 10.3 Kernel Upgrade

The latest round of kernel upgrades for OpenSUSE 10.3 breaks the madwifi drivers. You need to get the latest madwifi modules from here in order to get your wireless to work again.

I figured this out after scouring the web for clues on why my wireless stopped working after the kernel upgrade. Google Groups came to my rescue with this thread.

Safety Blades Vs. Razor Blades

I’ve always wondered if I really do save myself money by using safety razor blades instead of the more modern Schick or Gillette razors. So I created a TCO calculation (note: .ods open document format spreadsheet, you may need to do a “save link as”) to understand which is cheaper.

An assumption: I ignored the cost of the actual razor, since both are approximately the same cost.

In the end, my conclusions are:
1. The TCO is highly sensitive to the value you assign to your free time.
2. The TCO hinges on the amount of time you spend shaving with a safety blade vs. a normal razor. Most people shave a little faster with the razor cartridges.
3. The TCO is also affected by the number of uses you get out of the safety razor versus the modern razor blade.

LINUX time improvement

I saw the improvement in the clock first in Ubuntu, but I think I am wrong. I believe the actual improvement comes out of the Gnome project/Novell. I am really feeling silly because I use KDE.

Duh.

Ubuntu Time Improvement

FINALLY. Someone over at Ubuntu was listening to my prayers and they decided to rewrite the ugly world clock/weather applet for the Desktop.

As someone who travels a lot, I hate having to change the time zone. It currently displays a list of cities. I have to find a city in my time zone to change it, even if I am nowhere near the city. In the new version, it looks like you can edit locations and just pick on a map. I can’t wait for Hardy Heron to be released.

Magnetic Fields at Somerville Theater

Yes, Magnetic Fields are playing the Somerville Theater on Valentines day this year. Unfortunately, I am scheduled to be in New Jersey working on a project. I don’t really need to introduce them. I’ve always wanted to see them live.

I haven’t seen a live show in months. I really need to find a way to get to see shows I want to see.
