OpenSUSE 10.3 Kernel Upgrade

Posted: January 4th, 2008 | Author: saldarji | Filed under: technology | No Comments »

I upgraded my OpenSUSE laptop to the latest kernel version. I had been holding off on this because every single time I install the latest kernel, I have to go download an ATI graphics driver, prepare the RPM, and install it. Thankfully, there are a lot of places I can go for information.

Unfortunately, the upgrade was still quite painful because I have a 3 year old video card (ATI Mobility FireGL T2). Now that I have upgraded the kernel and reinstalled the correct and updated driver, the icons on my desktop all seem very pixellated.

I’m looking forward to the release of KDE4 (6 days!). I’d really like to try it out. I know a lot of the applications are already available for Opensuse 10.3, and I tried to install a few, but they are virtually unusable with my new configuration. I hope the final release by the OpenSUSE folks will work on my old laptop.

Frieling French Press

My younger brother purchased a Frieling French Press for me for Christmas. I am pretty happy with the quality of the coffee from this press. On top of that it is very nice looking, and it can’t shatter into a million pieces, like my old Bodum.

The negative is that if you overfill this press and push down on the handle, it actually shoots scalding hot liquid out of the spout. So you have to be careful when filling it or when operating the press.

Overall, I think that if you can do without the good looks, a less-expensive Bodum would probably be a better value.
