RMS

I just find it incredibly ironic that an acronym for a Microsoft DRM product is RMS. For my non-geeky friends, RMS can also mean Richard Matthew Stallman.

That is all.

Keychain Meme

Posted: July 28th, 2007 | Author: saldarji | Filed under: stuff | 2 Comments »

I have started accumulating a lot of keys. In the past six months I have added a key to the Novell Bentonville Office, the key to the apartment in Arkansas, the cigar punch, and the E*Trade RSA key. The cigar punch is something I don’t need all the time, but it has come in handy at the bachelor party and while hanging out with my coworkers in Arkansas.

The one thing I keep on a seperate keychain is the keys to my bicycle locks. I just added the E*Trade RSA key to my keychain. Seperately, that was the easiest setup process I have ever been through. It is a three step process: Order Key, receive key, activate key. E*Trade is awesome.

I really need to rationalize my keychain. The plan is to remove the cigar punch. I hope to get rid of the Arkansas keys once I am done with this project. And I hope that I will not have more than one key for my next apartment.

I encourage you to post photos of your keys. I am starting the Meme.

Le Tour and Teamwork

Posted: July 26th, 2007 | Author: saldarji | Filed under: bicycling, sports | No Comments »

The doping scandals in the tour this year have really made it painful to watch. Michael Rasmussen had a phenomenal climb up the Col d’ Aubisque in Stage 16. However, as strong as it was, it was completely eclipsed when his team withdrew him from the race for missing mandatory drug tests.

The Discovery Channel team has done really well. They have three riders in the top 10 of the General Classification (GC). Alberto Contador (Rookie Phenom), Levi Leipheimer (Experienced Winner) and Yaroslav Popovych (also Experienced Winner).

I was watching the 17 stage today, which is a relatively flat stage. Naturally, Team Disco was trying to protect Contador and his position on top of the GC. What astonished me was that Levi Leipheimer (#3 in GC) and Popovych (#8 in GC) were taking turns going to the back of the peloton and bringing up water from the support cars. This is normally a task reserved for the domestiques! I think it is safe to say that Team Discovery Channel might be the only ones worth of having “Team” in front of their sponsor name.

Yakuake

I switched over to KDE a while ago and I have found it to be a much better desktop than Gnome. I don’t want to start a flame war, so I will leave it at that. It’s just a personal preference.

If you use KDE, I would highly recommend trying out Yakuake. It was recommended to me by some coworkers, and it is awesome. The benefit is that it allows you to get to a console with the press of a key. You don’t have to search for icons or go through menus. Also, it hides the console very quickly. The height and width are both configurable, as are the fonts, animation speed, colors, and access keys.

The default setting (F12) conflicts with Kerry Beagle, so make sure you disable Kerry Beagle or reassign the key.

Pinemeadow Golf Review

Posted: July 23rd, 2007 | Author: saldarji | Filed under: sports | 1 Comment »

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I purchased a new driver and a new putter. It was delivered to me last week.

The driver is called the “Bloc“, which I believe is an appropriate name. It is square in shape to give it a higher Moment of Inertia (MOI).

After using it at the driving range and for two rounds, I believe I have figured out where and how high to tee up the ball. I am getting a little bit more distance out of the ball but I am still a very short hitter. As one of the guys in my foursome said the other day, the only stat category I was leading in was the number of fairways hit.

The putter I purchased is identical in shape to a generic putter that one of my other friends has. The only difference is that my putter has a flat face while his has grooves. The putter is much less forgiving than the Odyssey mallet I was using before, but I do like the feel It is not bad for 10 dollars.

I would buy both of these clubs again. The only thing is that I would pay extra to have both gripped with different grips. The stock grips are good, but I definitely prefer the Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips I have on my irons.

5 Dollar Shipping

Posted: July 17th, 2007 | Author: saldarji | Filed under: business, technology | No Comments » I paid about 5 dollars to get the golf clubs shipped to me in Arkansas by UPS. I have no idea how they make money. Here is the route:

Mapped, it looks something like this:

I suppose if you convert the 5 dollars into raw energy/fuel, it is theoretically possible to get a box that size from Oregon to Arkansas. It really is a miracle of modern logistics. technology, and efficiency that it could be so cheap to ship a package that distance. The other alternative is that UPS makes a loss off of orders like mine, but ends up making an offsetting profit on shorter routes.

We have come a long way from Western Union, horse-drawn carriages, and coal-burning trains.

Linux Multitouch Screen

Posted: July 16th, 2007 | Author: saldarji | Filed under: technology | No Comments »

I found this YouTube link for a Linux-based Multi-touch screen device via Gawker. This device seems somewhat similar to Microsoft Surface that I was bubbling about earlier.

I really think that these types of devices/computers will change the way we travel, shop and interact with information. The past 5 years we have seen a lot of focus on handheld gadgets. Historically, we are used to interacting with larger pieces of technology for entertainment. I don’t think that the leap is that big – we already interact with gaming machines, ATMs, kiosks and other large computing objects.

I think we’re going to start seeing these devices everywhere soon. That being said, I’m not very good at predicting the future. In fact, I thought that tablet PCs would be ubiquitous by now.

Gold Medal Park

There is a good article over here about the opening of Gold Medal Park, one of the city’s new additions. I think it is a nice place to go walking, and it is one more thing that helps open up access to the Mississippi river. The real benefit is to the million-dollar fake-loft condo owners, but middle-class apartment-dwelling bicyclers can go enjoy it on nice days.

Gratuitous Meme Post

This is a first for me. And probably the last. I have never posted or fallen prey to a blogger meme before. So this is quite out of character.

I was curious to see how my blog would rate after reading Kelly’s rating. My blog is rated G, so I am happy to report you can show my website to your kids.
