Built To Spill Tour

Posted: May 10th, 2007 | Author: | Filed under: music | No Comments »

One of my favorite bands, Built to Spill, is currently on tour in Europe. I started listening to them about 8 years ago after I saw a live show. I’ve been hooked ever since.

I heard on the Current that they have tickets on sale for their new tour, and that they will be playing First Avenue at the end of June. I think I will go pick up tickets the next time I’m in town.

My conflict is that the last time I saw them at First Ave, the crowd was the worst I’ve ever seen. It was filled with teenagers who were “moshing”. It was a really bad experience. I’m hoping that it will be better this time. My only consolation is that I saw Doug Martsch on a solo tour once, and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen.

Snakes In A Tunnel!

Posted: May 8th, 2007 | Author: | Filed under: photography, travel | No Comments »

Alejandro and I went on a hike two weeks ago. We were just exploring a well-traveled trail. In fact, most of the trail was actually cast in cement, so it felt like we were really just out for a stroll. We did manage to stray from the path a bit and saw a bunch of beaver dams.

We had a really fun day, but the most striking moment of the day was running into a snake right at the beginning of the trail. We had seen a small baby snake the previous day which had a blue underbelly and a neck stripe. I haven’t been able to find it online anywhere, though there is this great resource for Arkansas snakes.

The second snake I have identified as a Speckled King Snake. I am way too chicken to try to handle a snake, since I can’t tell what is poisonous and what isn’t. This snake is not poisonous. But boy am I glad I didn’t try to touch this one. “In defense, this species will bite, poop, and emit a foul-smelling musk.”

I really like this first picture because of its minimalism and the addition of the yellow corner for color.

Here you can see the snake in more detail…

Tracey In Minneapolis

Sorry for the lack of updates, but I have gotten very busy with my project. Also, Tracey is in Minneapolis for the weekend, so I have been busy with that.

I spent last weekend hiking around Northwest Arkansas with Alejandro, so I should post some pictures from that. You can see a few that Alejandro took on his flickr page.

Say It Ain’t So

Two pieces of news on Desktop Linux surprised me today.

The first is that the OpenSUSE team decided to drop ZENworks from the distribution. The issues with OpenSUSE package management are pretty well known. In fact, I blogged that I was reverting to the native tools last week. In addition, Novell decided to open up YAST and Libzypp, and release it under GPLv2.

This is wonderful news, however, I believe that Novell missed the opportunity to spin up Zen as a value-added package in SLES and SLED. The quote accompanying the article is really terrible, even if it is true.

A typical comment came from Ted Bullock, an openSUSE developer, who said, “This is very good news. I have never felt comfortable with the overall reliability and integration of ZENworks in openSUSE. I’m glad to see the last of it.”
The second piece of news that caught me by surprise is the rumor that Dell will offer Ubuntu on their desktops. It is still speculation, but if they do offer Linux on the desktop, it is a win for open source in general

Updated: My not-so-secret sources seem to confirm that it is true. D-day indeed.
