Blood From The Sewers

Posted: March 31st, 2007 | Author: saldarji | Filed under: health, stuff | No Comments »

I’m back in Minneapolis this weekend. There is an interesting article about Minneapolis about blood squirting out of the sewer.

I have way too many projects on my plate right now. I am trying to buy some camping gear for some hiking in Northwest Arkansas. I have to rebuild Tracey’s Website. I have to do my taxes. And lastly, I really want to put together a server to share my photographs and music with people.

I have plans to hang out with my brother (go see 300), Nadine (co-worker who is moving to Mpls), and Tonya (coffee) at some point.

Coffee and Spiders

My coworker from Columbia, Alejandro Forero, was kind enough to bring me back some coffee. I am so psyched! Juan Valdez, the face of Columbian coffee, is on the bag. Check out this cool commercial featuring Mr. Valdez.

Also, while setting up a Linux server, Alejandro and I noticed that there was a small spider on the cubicle wall. I’m not sure what type of spider it is, but it gave us a little bit of entertainment. I hope I don’t fall asleep at work and get bitten by this thing. It is too small to kill me, but probably would leave a pretty big bite mark.

Travel Plans Through April

Posted: March 26th, 2007 | Author: saldarji | Filed under: travel | No Comments »

There is a weekend soon where I will be staying in Arkansas. I believe it is Easter Weekend. I hope I can get out and go camping before it gets too hot.

It can be exciting to travel around, and I appreciate the chance to go to Boston with my “flybacks”. But I sort of miss having a regular life sometimes.

Weekend In Boston

Posted: March 25th, 2007 | Author: saldarji | Filed under: travel | 1 Comment »

I spent the weekend in Boston with Tracey. Before I left, I shot this photograph of a plane passing overhead in Arkansas.

Once I reached Boston, I spent the night hanging out with two Wiener dogs, Scooter and Whoopie. I worked through Friday, and I managed to finally mail my expenses in so I can get paid!

We drove down to the Jenkin’s family cottage down on West Island, which is out on Buzzard’s Bay. It is a really nice neighborhood and has a relaxed beach atmosphere. Everyone owns boats, and you can see buoys hanging on pretty much everyone’s sheds workshops.

Python and Stuff

I decided that I should try to learn Python. I am going to try hard to start contributing back to Open Source.

Tomorrow I am flying to Boston and I will return to Arkansas on Sunday. I will try to go to the Bon Savants show at the the Middle East. However, I will be happy just to have some time to hang out with Tracey.

How To Steal An Obelisk

Posted: March 20th, 2007 | Author: saldarji | Filed under: photography, travel | 1 Comment »

According to Wikipedia, the Luxor Obelisk at Place de la Concorde in Paris is 23 meters tall. It is a fantastic landmark. However, it plays into a conversation that Tracey and I have been having about stolen, borrowed and transported works of art. Obviously, it is a long and complicated discussion. I guess our consensus is that it is a bad thing to go to foreign countries and come home with architectural souvenirs.

A digression – I also put plants and other possibly invasive species into that category of “things not to bring back.” Tracey disagrees. You should tell her that she is crazy on her blog.

If you ever need to steal a 23 meter obelisk and transport it to your home country, I have taken a photograph of the instructions. These are conveniently engraved on the base of the Luxor Obelisk for enterprising tourists.

Also, It would be fantastic if the Egyptians happened to read these instructions and return the Obelisk to its home.

Merry-Go-Rounds

While in France with Tracey, I was amazed at the number of Carousels there were around the tourist destinations. I was really fascinated by them. I wish I had a video camera to capture them spinning.

Anyways, Tracey keeps making fun of me because I refused to ride on any of them. She was joking that I took pictures of all the Merry-Go-Rounds that we didn’t ride on. I posted a few of the better photographs on my Flickr page.

I forgot to mention that I got my Holga pictures back this last weekend, and it looks like most of them came out! I hope to scan a few in this weekend and post the results of my experiment

Execustay Part Two

Posted: March 18th, 2007 | Author: saldarji | Filed under: travel | No Comments »

So I apologize for the lack of updates over the weekend. I flew back home on Thursday, and I flew back to Arkansas tonight. I decided to bring my golf clubs with me, since the place I am staying at is adjacent to an executive course. I’ve unpacked my suitcase and settled in.

One weird thing, the mattress on the bed is covered with plastic. I assume it is what it shipped in. They have provided some very nice sheets and comforter for the set. I am too tired to remove the plastic sheet, so I will take care of it tomorrow when I get a chance. I hope I don’t end up buying a mattress from Marriott!

On a side note, I went with my brother to a Dean and Britta show on Saturday. I’d highly recommend going to see them if they come to your city.

I did take the time to start sorting through France photographs, so I will have some posts on that topic this week.

Execustay

Posted: March 14th, 2007 | Author: saldarji | Filed under: business, travel | No Comments »

I’m exhausted today because in addition to my current consulting gig I am picking up a business case/sales proposal on the side. The case is something I worked on a while ago and it has popped onto the radar again. Since I started it, I’d like to finish it. It has a very low probability of success.

It reminds me of “life rules” that Warren Buffett’s (first?) wife created. I heard this list on NPR. This is according to her granddaughter:
  1. show up
  2. tell the truth
  3. pay attention
  4. do your best
  5. don’t be attached to the outcome -link
The important one, IMHO, is the last one.

Anyways, I have sent in the forms to stay at an “Execustay” hotel, so I will have a nice one-bedroom apartment here in Arkansas. There are a few things I’m looking forward to…the nice gym, the adjacent golf course, and homemade breakfast (with pressed coffee!) in the morning. Also, I’m considering buying a bicycle to commute. I’d like to buy this one, but I’ll probably get this one.

OpenSUSE and fglrx

Posted: March 13th, 2007 | Author: saldarji | Filed under: technology | 1 Comment »

I updated my OpenSUSE installation (yeah, I use it for work. yeah, I know it is unsupported) to the 2.6.18.8 kernel last week. Unfortunatly, it has created this weird line underneath the cursor here and here. It is really annoying. I tried to take a screenshot of it, but one “feature” of the screenshot in OpenSUSE is that it hides the cursor.

I believe it has something to do with fglrx. It is very similar to a problem that is listed on this page. Unfortunately, their fix didn’t work. I wish I could fix it but I have spent way too much time on it already and I have a lot of work I need to focus on. If anyone can help me with this, please let me know!

On a side note, I updated to Gaim 2.0 (beta5). It is pretty stable and I like it. I have beta6 on my Ubuntu machine at home so I knew it’d be good. The only issue I encountered is that the audio stopped working. This can be fixed by putting in the “aplay %s” command under preferences > sounds > sound command. Of course, you have to use method = command to get it to work.
